WOLVES boss Dan McNamara has urged his players to soak everything in as they prepare for the game of their lives against Manchester United.
A crowd of 5,000 is expected at Telford’s SEAH Stadium as semi-professional Wolves, who play in the game’s third-tier National League Northern Premier Division, host the holders in the Women’s FA Cup fifth round tomorrow.
“This is absolutely what dreams are made of,” McNamara told the PA news agency. “This is probably the biggest game that a lot of us will ever play, against one of the biggest names in world football.
“We’ve had a break from the league this week where we can really embrace what’s about to happen.”
Wolves are second in their division, challenging the likes of Nottingham Forest and Burnley for promotion to the Championship.
The club are ambitious and narrowly missed out on a spot in the second tier three years ago when they were beaten by Southampton in a play-off.
Despite being the clear underdogs, McNamara is determined to ensure his side put up a good fight.
“I’m not the manager that just wants to sit there and try to ride out a 2-0 scoreline to Manchester United — I want to try to get bums off seats,” said McNamara, who was appointed full-time this season having previously combined the role with his primary job as an aircraft technician in the Royal Air Force.
“There are 5,000 coming to watch and we want to try to entertain. I’m not saying we’re going to be going all gung-ho, but we certainly want to give a good account of ourselves.
“We want to make sure it’s not a walkover, pose them a few problems and make them work for it.
“Everyone knows it’s an uphill task — talk about David and Goliath — but it’s the FA Cup, anything is possible.”
One of the players Wolves will need to contain is England’s Ella Toone, who is also looking forward to the contest.
“We’re really excited,” Toone said. “I mean, that’s the whole point of the FA Cup, going to different grounds.
“I love playing in the FA Cup, and obviously it’s our trophy to keep, so we’ve got to make sure that we put on a performance, and we’re looking forward to it.”
The tie is one of two to take place tomorrow along with an all-Barclays Women’s Super League clash between Aston Villa and Brighton.
