LABOUR cheered continued war today as conference delegates gave an ovation to Ukrainian ambassador to London General Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
The general, a former commander of Ukrainian armed forces, thanked the government for its support in the continuing conflict with Russia and asserted Ukraine’s right to strike at targets within the country.
Britain has been pressing for the Ukrainians to be allowed to fire British-made missiles into Russia, but the White House has yet to give the vital go-ahead.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy trumpeted increased support for the war in his own conference speech, saying that Labour pledged “three billion a year in military aid for as long as it takes.”
He also pledged increased action against “Russian disinformation,” asserting that Labour was “working with the global South to take on Putin’s lies.”
Mr Lammy repeated demands for a ceasefire in both Gaza and between Israel and Hezbollah, but in a separate fringe event appeared to rule out a total arms embargo on Israel.
He told the Labour Together fringe that it would be a “mistake” to suspend all arms export licences to Israel, suggesting such a move would lead to “a wider war.”
