US VICE-PRESIDENT Kamala Harris has won selection as the Democratic presidential nominee for November.
Ms Harris received almost 4,600 votes in a five-day online voting process, which amounted to 99 per cent of participating delegates. The vote was by delegates to the Democratic National Convention, which will meet in Chicago from August 19-22. As the sitting vice-president was the only candidate nominated by the required 300 delegates, she was the only one eligible to receive votes.
Though the Convention itself will formally confirm her position, it means that Ms Harris will run against Donald Trump for the presidency in November.
Ms Harris also won endorsement from hospitality union Unite Here, whose president Gwen Mills dismissed Mr Trump’s bid for support by promising to make tips tax-free.
Mr Trump was merely “making a play” for votes, while Ms Harris has a record of backing unions, Ms Mills said. The union pledged to mobilise canvassers to knock on 3.3 million doors in swing states.
