ISRAELI soldiers killed a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The fatal shooting of Ali Majed Hamadneh was the latest in a wave of violence in the West Bank that has claimed the lives of 22 people since the start of the Iran war.
Israel’s military said it responded to a violent riot in the village of Deir Jarir, north-east of Ramallah. A soldier in the reserves shot a Palestinian, who was evacuated for medical treatment and later died at the hospital.
The military said it opened an investigation, although Palestinians and human rights groups say Israeli routinely fails to hold settlers or soldiers accountable for act of violence.
The Israeli military declined to comment on whether the reservist was on duty during the incident or involved in the riot as a civilian.
Deir Jarir village council leader Fathi Hamdan said Mr Hamadneh was shot by a settler in civilian clothes and that the military only responded to the incident after the shooting.
So far this year, 33 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israelis, two thirds since Israel and the United States launched their illegal and unprovoked war on Iran in March. Settlers have been responsible for at least eight of the deaths.
In 2025, 240 Palestinians were killed in the territory, according to the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, with Israel’s military to blame in the vast majority of cases and nine people, less than 4 per cent, killed by Israeli settlers.
The wave of violence comes as Israel’s far-right government approved the establishment of 34 new settlements in the West Bank, according monitoring group Peace Now.
The group says that, since 2023, the government has established a total of 102 new settlements.
