Israeli minister mocks flotilla activists as final aid boat is intercepted
Activists in orange life jackets sit aboard a Gaza-bound Sumud flotilla boat as Israeli navy soldiers sail it into the port of Ashdod, Israel, October 2, 2025, after it was intercepted while approaching the Gaza coast

ISRAELI forces intercepted today the last boat from an international flotilla trying to break Israel’s sea blockade of war-ravaged Gaza as cities around the world erupted into more protests against Israeli actions in Gaza and the arrests of some 450 activists who were on the boats.

This was followed by a far-right Israeli minister confronting the detained flotilla activists, mocking their aid initiative and accusing them of supporting “terrorism” in a video circulating today.

Four Italian citizens have been deported from Israel. Israeli authorities said they were in the process of deporting the other activists.

The interception of the flotilla by the Israelis led to the detentions of activists including Greta Thunberg, Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela and several European politicians.

The actions of the Israelis sparked fresh demonstrations across Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia.

In Europe, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protest on Thursday against the flotilla interception again late Thursday in Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Paris and Geneva.

In Israel’s southern port of Ashdod, the country’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was filmed visiting the site where activists were being processed ahead of their expected deportations.

Mr Ben-Gvir said that the decision of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to deport the activists from the flotilla was wrong. He insisted they should be imprisoned in Israel.

Visiting where the activists were being processed, Mr Ben-Gvir was shown railing at the activists, accusing them of supporting “terrorism” and aboard one of the seized boats, mocked the activists’ aid initiative.

In the footage, the activists are seen sitting cross-legged on the floor while Mr Ben-Kvir screams at them. One person is heard shouting back “free Palestine,” but it was not immediately clear from the footage who that was.

Meanwhile, Hamas is still considering whether to accept the 20-point “peace plan” put forward by United States President Donald Trump and Mr Netanyahu on Tuesday.

President Trump said today that Hamas has until Sunday 6pm (11pm BST) to accept the plan.

Hamas political bureau member Mohammad Nazzal told the Al Jazeera news network on Thursday that the group was discussing President Trump’s plan and would soon announce its position on the proposal.

He said: “We are not dealing with the plan under the logic that time is a sword pointed at our neck.”

In Gaza, Israeli forces killed at least 63 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip today and wounded another 227, according to medical sources. Reportedly 80 were wounded while seeking aid.
