ISRAELI forces have reportedly carried out new missile attacks in southern Lebanon today despite the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran and criticism from US President Donald Trump.
Israeli jets targeted the Nabatieh al-Fawqa area and the outskirts of neighbouring Kfar Tebnit, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.
There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli military, but it has previously said it is targeting the Hezbollah resistance group.
The text of a deal between Iran and the US to provide a framework towards ending the illegal and unprovoked war launched by the US and Israel against Iran has not been released.
But Pakistan, which led the mediation of the deal, says it includes an end to the fighting and an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon.
On Tuesday, Mr Trump accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of needing “to be more responsible with respect to Lebanon.”
Mr Trump told the G7 that he didn’t approve of the latest round of Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
He said: “Without the US, there would be no Israel. Without me, there would be no Israel because no other president was willing to do what I did.”
But Mr Netanyahu made it clear on Monday that his country had no plans to leave Lebanon and would be there “for as long as necessary.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that it views Israeli attacks on Lebanon or any continued Israeli military presence in Lebanese territory as a violation of the MoU with the US.
The contents of the MoU have not been officially released ahead of an official signing ceremony on Friday in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, but it has been widely leaked.
A number of news outlets say the text includes a declaration of an “immediate and permanent end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.”
The MoU also reportedly provides for a lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports and for Iran to immediately allow transit in the Strait of Hormuz.
The reports say the US and its regional partners will also create a “comprehensive plan” for the “rehabilitation and economic development” of Iran, and ensure financing of at least $300 billion (£221bn), an end to “all types of sanctions” on Iran and a pledge by Iran to “never produce nuclear weapons.”
The text allegedly states that the US undertakes, “in light of the progress of negotiations towards a final agreement,” to release frozen Iranian funds and assets.
