AHMEDABAD has been formally ratified as the host city for the centenary 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The Indian city had been selected ahead of a rival bid from Abuja in India for the multisport event in five years’ time, and was given final approval at Commonwealth Sport’s general assembly in Glasgow today.
Ahmedabad follows Delhi, from 2010, as the second Indian host city.
It will also provide some long-term certainty for the Commonwealth movement — which was rocked by Victoria’s decision to withdraw as hosts of next year’s Games in 2023, with Glasgow stepping in.
Commonwealth Sport also confirmed between 15 to 17 sports will feature at the 2030 Games, which follows a programme review.
Athletics and para-athletics, swimming and para-Swimming, table tennis and para table tennis, bowls and para bowls, weightlifting and para powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing are all included.
The remainder of the programme is set to be finalised, with the host city able to propose up to two new or traditional sports. Those currently under consideration include T20 cricket, archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, rugby sevens, cycling, diving, hockey and wrestling.
President of Commonwealth Sport Donald Rukare believes Ahmedabad 2030 would bring “enormous sporting passion and relevance,” while marking the “start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport” following a “Games reset.”
Rukare said: “I am delighted to report strong interest from a range of nations to host the 2034 Games and beyond. We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health.”
