How the Institute of Employment Rights is working with Labour to transform the world of work
John Hendy QC speaks at Arise, flanked by (left to right) Lauren Townsend, session chair Christine Blower and Laura Pidcock

THE Institute of Employment Rights (IER) session Transforming the Workplace at last weekend’s Arise festival of left ideas helped explain the difficulties unions face in organising in precarious workplaces as well as the detail of Labour policy being developed to empower working people.

As well as shadow labour minister Laura Pidcock’s address opposite, TGI Friday’s dispute organiser Lauren Townsend looked at how employers act to divide and conquer workers attempting to organise, while the IER’s John Hendy QC explained the importance of sectoral collective bargaining to raising wages and eliminating poverty.

Townsend’s experience at TGI is a classic example of the way the world of work has become progressively more exploitative as employers take advantage of trade union weakness to drive down standards.
