Daughter of British-US national in Iranian jail urges Truss to secure his freedom

THE daughter of Morad Tahbaz urged Liz Truss today to secure his release from prison in Iran, at a protest outside the Foreign Office in London.

Roxanne Tahbaz said her father feels “abandoned” by the Foreign Secretary and British government after he was left out of a deal struck with Iranian authorities which saw Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori return home last month.

Mr Tahbaz, a prominent wildlife conservationist, was briefly allowed out on furlough but returned to custody just two days later.

His daughter said the family had been led to believe he would be coming home alongside the two dual nationals. His wife, who is also in Iran, has been put on a travel ban by the Iranian authorities.

Speaking at her protest outside the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Wednesday morning, Ms Tahbaz said: “We’re here today because it’s been one month since Nazanin and Anoosheh have come home, my father’s still sitting in prison and my mother’s still on a travel ban.

“So we’re hoping to have the press and the media help us to call on the government and on the Foreign Secretary to keep her promise and bring him home to us, so we can be reunited as a family.”

The 66-year-old, who has British, US and Iranian citizenship, was arrested during a crackdown on environmental activists in January 2018 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for “spying for the US.”

The Foreign Office said it had secured indefinite furlough for Mr Tahbaz last month, but that the Iranian government had failed to honour the agreement.
