ANY plan to teach some form of maths to all pupils until the age of 18 must tackle the subject’s “chronic teacher shortages,” unions and education experts said today.

The warning came after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claimed the move is needed to combat high rates of innumeracy and allow the country’s education system to “rival the best in the world.”

The former chancellor does not apparently envisage making maths A-level compulsory for all 16-18-year-olds, but further details will be set out in due course.
