Police struggle to hold back hundreds of pickets as a worker's bus approaches the Grunwick film processing plant in Willesden, north London
THERE will be a whole-day celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Grunwick Strike tomorrow.
The landmark two-year industrial dispute at the Grunwick Film Processing Laboratories in north-west London was staged by mostly South Asian immigrant women who faced severe sexism and racial discrimination.
The event will be held at the Sands Films Studio in London with participation also available online.
The morning session begins at 10.30am and will see journalist and broadcaster Yasmin Alibhai-Brown give her personal memories of the strike, as a fellow Ugandan Asian migrant.
A panel discussion will be held in the afternoon, with activists from the time remembering Grunwick 50 years ago.
Dawn Butler MP, who represents the north-west London constituency where the strike took place, will speak on Grunwick: Then and Now, highlighting its relevance for the labour movement today.
