Glasgow teachers vote for strike action
Lecturers and other university staff take part in a rally on Buchanan Street, Glasgow, September 19, 2023

GLASGOW teachers have overwhelmingly backed strike action as they fight the SNP-run city council’s education cuts agenda.

Last year, Glasgow City Council (GCC) passed a joint SNP-Green budget including a three-year plan to slash 450 teaching posts.

More than 200 teaching posts have since gone.

As teachers, parents and students continue to fight the cuts, education union EIS balloted their members for strike action, going on to win 95 per cent support on a 57 per cent turnout.

EIS general secretary Andrea Bradley said: “In a city that faces significant problems with deprivation, with a large number of young people struggling with poverty-related disadvantage, it is a disgrace that the council continues to push ahead with plans that will further slash the teacher workforce.

“This ballot result should encourage the council to give serious pause for thought.”

EIS Glasgow secretary Jane Gow warned: “GCC must now end its programme of cuts and quickly, or Glasgow’s teachers will take strike action to defend the quality of education in our schools.”

A GCC spokeswoman said: “The EIS has notified us of the outcome of their statutory ballot and their mandate for potential strike action.”
