Fofana feels ‘small details’ holding Chelsea back amid run of poor form
Chelsea's Wesley Fofana gestures to the fans after the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge, London, November 10, 2024

CHELSEA defender Wesley Fofana feels “small details” are holding the Blues back after they let another lead slip away in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Enzo Maresca’s side have lost 13 points at home from winning positions this season and are on a run of one Premier League win in seven.

Poor form has seen them drop out of the top four, with Chelsea having been second as recently as the end of November, and a rotten month has prompted a drastic reassessment of the team’s direction under the Italian.

A host of chances were wasted against Bournemouth as for the second time in a week Chelsea’s dominance came to nothing, as was the case during the defeat by Aston Villa on December 27.

Defensively frailties too were apparent — both Cherries goals came from long throw-ins that created chaos in the Blues six-yard box — as was the absence of an apparent leader in moments of adversity.

“It was a tough game,” said Fofana. “We tried to give everything but we didn’t kill the game in the second half.

“We had a few chances we didn’t score. We need to kill the game and we need to score. It’s not only about the forward players, it’s everyone.

“Sometimes it’s like this. We try everything.”

David Brooks gave Bournemouth the lead after six minutes before Cole Palmer equalised from the penalty spot.

Enzo Fernandez’s top-corner strike looked to have Chelsea on the road to a morale-boosting win but they buckled again before half-time, Justin Kluivert tapping in unmarked at the far post to cap a diverting first half.

“We need to do better, we need to analyse and try to progress,” said Fofana.

“When you concede two, it’s frustrating. When we don’t win we miss opportunities, but we are only in December, and we need to progress. It’s not finished and we will continue to work.

“I think we are getting closer, we are just missing small details.

“It’s been an up-and-down year. We got into the Champions League and we won the Club World Cup, which was good. We know we need to progress more, we need to work more and keep working hard. We are all together.”

Andoni Iraola’s side are now 10 without a win in the league and have dropped from second when they last won in October to 15th.

However, they have been beaten just once in their last five and midfielder Alex Scott sees reason to be optimistic.

“We played much better and showed a lot more fight,” he said. “Coming to a place like Chelsea is never easy. The second half wasn’t amazing in terms of possession, but we defended really well and it was a huge improvement from us.

“To score two set-piece goals is definitely a positive for us.

“The first half was more end-to-end and they maybe dominated the second but we showed we wanted it and we were much better defensively than we have been in recent weeks.

“We’ve got to keep pushing and progressing heading into the new year.”
