FMQs overshadowed by poll showing Reform lead
A view of the Senedd, the Welsh parliament building in Cardiff

QUESTIONS to the First Minister were overshadowed today by the latest opinion poll for the Senedd showing Reform UK in the lead.

The Sky News poll for next year’s Senedd election puts Reform UK on 28 per cent, followed by Plaid Cymru on 26 per cent.

Labour’s vote share is 23 per cent, while the current official opposition, the Welsh Conservatives, are on 10 per cent, which could see the party lose all of its seats.

The proportional system to be used punishes parties at just below the 10 per cent mark.

With no Tories elected, this could see nobody in the Senedd prepared to work with Reform UK if they are the largest party.

Both Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour have ruled out working with Reform.

The 400,000 people in Wales estimated not to be on the electoral register take a greater significance with Reform leading the polls.

Former Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said the Welsh government had promised to introduce automatic voter registration ahead of next year’s Senedd election.

First Minister Eluned Morgan said there are four local authorities across Wales taking part in automatic voter registration pilots.

But Ms Morgan warned that there might not be time to introduce the change in time for next year’s election.

The pilots run until the end of September, and the FM said the electoral commission would evaluate them and report by December.

The FM said this would not give her government and local councils enough time to consider the report and implement the legislation and changes needed.
