Explosions hit Port Sudan for fourth day, threatening vital aid lifeline

EXPLOSIONS rocked the Port of Sudan, a critical lifeline and entry point for aid, for a fourth consecutive day amid the ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Sudanese army and residents have blamed the latest assault on the RSF, which has been in a brutal civil conflict with the SAF since 2023.

An army source, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the blast was caused by a drone strike that was countered with anti-aircraft missiles.

Port Sudan had been one of the few remaining safe havens in the country, sheltering hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

It also serves as the interim base for the SAF-aligned government and is the country’s primary gateway for humanitarian aid.

The attacks have raised alarm over potential disruptions to critical aid deliveries.

The United Nations warned on Tuesday that Port Sudan remains ”a lifeline for humanitarian operations” in a country where famine has already been declared in some areas.

“Further attacks could lead to more human suffering in what is already the world’s largest humanitarian crisis,” the UN stated.
