Employment Rights Bill a ‘paper tiger’ after Cabinet reshuffle, Unite says

LABOUR’S workers rights’ Bill has become a “paper tiger” following the removal of every minister that worked on it, Unite said today.

Justin Madders was sacked as minister for employment rights and Jonathan Reynolds was moved from business and trade secretary to chief whip in a major Cabinet reshuffle.

It was sparked by Angela Rayner’s resignation from government over failing to right amount of stamp duty, who also played a key role in forming the Employment Rights Bill.

Ministers now face Lords amendments to water down the legislation.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Labour’s promise to ban fire and rehire is now a burnt-out shell.

“By amending the Employment Relations Bill to allow councils to use fire and rehire, [it] has them given them the green light to push down workers’ pay to cut debt. Yet again workers pay the price.

“This along with the government’s reshuffle, taking out all ministers who have worked with unions on the Bill, signals a move in the wrong direction. Workers will feel duped when they realise the Bill is a paper tiger.

“Unscrupulous employers will continue to exploit workers and the Bill will do little to combat that.”

The union has previously slammed Labour’s decision to allow private-sector employers under financial difficulties to continue to use fire and rehire.

Speaking at the TUC conference today, general secretary Paul Nowak said: “I’m confident the government will deliver the Bill and deliver it in full.

“At our parliamentary reception earlier this week the PM looked me in the eye ... and talked about delivering the Employment Rights Bill and enacting its improvements in employment law.”
