Corbyn leads tribute to Carl Sargeant

LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn led tributes to Welsh Assembly Member Carl Sargeant yesterday after attending his funeral in Flintshire.

The 49-year-old was found dead at his home in Connah’s Quay on November 7, just days after being dropped from his role as cabinet secretary for communities and children.

Mr Corbyn who said: “I was honoured to attend the celebration of Carl’s life.

“It was very moving to see such an outpouring of support from the community Carl was brought up in and proud to represent.”

Flowers and a Newcastle United football shirt were laid on top of his coffin, which was carried into the church to the sound of Michael Buble’s song Home.

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones said he stayed away to respect the wishes of the family.

It is understood that Mr Sargeant took his own life four days after losing his job over claims of inappropriate behaviour towards women.

An inquiry into the handling of his sacking will be held, along with a separate investigation over bullying claims, dating back to 2014, made by Mr Sargeant.
