Climate activists in treacle protest over US ‘oil wars’

CLIMATE activists doused themselves in treacle outside the US embassy today in a protest against Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East and soaring fuel costs.

Protesters played dead outside the building in London as they were hosed with the liquid from a life-sized petrol pump branded Rosebank - the massive undeveloped oil field to the west of Shetland whose licensing awaits a British government decision.

Organised by the campaign group Fossil Free London, the stunt sought to draw attention to windfall profits raked-in by oil and gas giants as the US and Israeli attack Iran and citizens at home pay the price in soaring bills.

One protester, Rosie, 28, who did not give her surname, said: “We see the horrors of war through our phone screens, and of course, the people of Iran suffer whilst oil bosses that back Donald Trump and Reform here in the UK see billions in profit.

“Real energy security is renewable energy.

“That’s how we produce energy security and continuously lower bills for decades to come.”

Fossil Free London director Robin Wells said: “Right now we are seeing the horrors of Trump’s war on Iran in the faces of dead schoolgirls and facing skyrocketing energy costs at home. And Big Oil cashes out big, with bumper profits.

“We’re protesting today to say that for as long as the UK stays tied up in fossil fuels, we’ll see more oil wars, more extreme weather deaths and more instability.

“The UK needs to cut ties with Trump and Big Oil. We need to break free from this knot of violence.

“That starts with scrapping new UK oil and gas and rejecting Rosebank. Until then, being tied into Big Oil’s big disaster leaves us paying the price.”
