PEACE campaigners and trade unionists have joined forces at a vigil outside the British government’s office in Cardiff to demand that it put pressure on Israel to stop killing journalists.

About 100 gathered on Thursday night to hear the names of the 233 dead journalists and media workers read out by four speakers.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) tried to deliver a letter to Wales Secretary Jo Stevens before the vigil started, but the government office refused to accept it.

The letter calls on the government to press for international action to stop the deliberate targeting of journalists by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

Rachel Howells and David Nicholson, who co-chair the NUJ Welsh executive council, say in their letter that “the sustained murderous attacks of the IDF in Gaza” has resulted in the deaths of more than 61,000 Palestinians, including 233 journalists and media workers.

Mr Nicholson told the protest: “By silencing the voices of journalists, Israel is trying to stop the world from finding out about its war crimes.

“There must be no impunity for Israel and our government has to add its voice to other governments calling for international media organisation and journalists to be allowed into Gaza.”
