CARDIFF University has scrapped plans to axe its nursing, music and modern languages courses following a major campaign by its University and College Union (UCU) members.

But management’s decision to keep more than 400 jobs at risk is “unacceptable” with the physical and mental health effects “becoming unbearable” for many union members, Cardiff UCU warned today.

“We will continue to press university leaders in the strongest terms to take all staff out of scope for redundancy and to work with us to find ways to continue teaching and research in ancient history, languages, religion, and theology,” said the branch.

Members are being consulted over future industrial action over the “disastrous and unnecessary programme of cuts,” it added.

Vice-chancellor Wendy Larner announced on Tuesday that music would have revised entry targets and content, and modern language programmes would have smaller cohorts.

Plans to close ancient history and religion and theology courses were to go ahead, subject to final approval by the University Council on June 17.
