Witnessing a war of words at a meeting on tackling militarism at The World Transformed, BEN COWLES spoke to a union rep who is organising against war from inside the arms industry itself, to hear about worker-led solutions to ending weapons production
Morning Star campaigns manager CALVIN TUCKER gives an update on the drive to raise £95,000 to see the people’s paper keep fighting the good fight against the rich and powerful

GOOD MORNING, comrades — and welcome to the second fortnightly update on the donations, events and energy driving our 95th Anniversary Appeal for the Morning Star. We’ve drawn up a five-year plan to take us to our centenary in 2030, but it’s going to require a Stakhanovite effort!
Since our last report, six generous readers have chipped in a fantastic £1,195, with contributions ranging from £5 to £1,000. That brings our total to £9,219 — 10 per cent of the £95,000 target. A solid start — but we’ve only conquered the foothills.
Think of it like the legendary climb up the Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees. Now the mountain looms above. When I rode an amateur stage of the Tour de France in freezing rain, I learned one crucial lesson: focus on turning the pedals — and don’t look up.
That’s our attitude now. Every pound donated is another push up the slope, another show of solidarity keeping the Star rolling off the presses — Britain’s only socialist daily, owned by its readers and the labour movement, not billionaire press barons.
How you can help keep us in the saddle
★ Buy and sell raffle tickets! Order books of five or 10 (sale or return) from raffle@peoples-press.com. Prizes include two nights at the workers’ stately home, Wortley Hall, a luxury hamper, and three volumes of Marxist art theorist Hans Hess’s classic works.
★ Send a donation today. Include your name, location and a short message — we’ll share your solidarity in future updates.
★ Join your local Readers and Supporters Group — listings are in today’s paper. Meet comrades, trade unionists and campaigners, and help organise collective fundraising for the paper that belongs to you.
★ Share our social media posts. Every repost and retweet helps the Morning Star reach new readers.
★ Invite a speaker from the Star to your branch, union or community meeting — and spread the word face-to-face.
At the bottom of that Pyrenean mountain, I was diagnosed with hypothermia. “If I carry on, will I die?” I asked the medics. “Probably not,” they said — so I did.
When it comes to the Morning Star, the question is the reverse: will the paper survive if we don’t carry on fundraising? Probably not.
So comrades, let’s dig deep, keep pedalling, and help the people’s paper ride on proudly towards its first centenary.
