Build more homes fit for elderly people, urges housing association

BUILDING more homes for elderly people is a necessity and could save millions in the coming years as Scotland’s population ages, according to a major housing association.

Launching its manifesto ahead of May’s Holyrood elections, Hanover Scotland said that the population of over-65s will soar by 25 per cent by 2041, putting health and social care systems and budgets for home adaptations under “enormous strain.”

Arguing that investment in new homes which are elderly-ready or easily adaptable could save £7 for every pound spent, amounting to £500 million every year, Hanover Scotland’s Angela Currie said: “We are at a crossroads.

“Scotland can either plan now to support its ageing population with dignity or face mounting pressures that will cost more and deliver less.

“The demographic data is clear. By acting now, political leaders can show real foresight and compassion while also easing pressures on public services.

“We urge every party to consider these proposals not just as policy options but as essential pillars of a sustainable Scotland.”

A Scottish government spokesperson responded: “We welcome Hanover Scotland’s contribution on this issue and will give their manifesto careful consideration.”
