Bedouin man shot dead by Israeli police
Bedouins gather to protest Israeli police raids and against discrimination toward their community, January 1, 2026, on a road near the village of Bir Hadaj in Negev region, southern Israel

POLICE in Israel shot dead a Bedouin Arab man during a raid in his village on Saturday night.

The killing of 36-year-old Muhammed Hussein Tarabin came as police have been conducting what they describe as a crackdown on crime in the southern village of Tarabin for the past week.

Police claimed that officers opened fire on a man who had “endangered” forces during an arrest raid.

Relatives said that Mr Tarabin, whose family has the same name as the village, was at home.

Mr Tarabin’s 11-year-old son Hussein said in a video statement that men in uniform came to their house at night. He heard shots and saw his father’s body lying on the ground.

Posting on X, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said: “Anyone who endangers our police officers and fighters must be neutralised.”

Israel’s more than 200,000 Bedouin are the poorest members of the Arab minority, which often suffers discrimination.

Residents say police have made about two dozen arrests in Tarabin over the past week, but regional council spokesman Nati Yefet said most had been quickly released.

He accused Mr Ben-Gvir of intensifying the raids in the run-up to elections expected later this year.
