Some hospitals and funerals postponed due to new bank holiday for Queen's funeral

SOME hospital appointments and funerals have been postponed because of the bank holiday marking the Queen’s funeral.

NHS Trusts in some areas have said they will postpone non-urgent procedures and clinic appointments for some patients on September 19.

Other hospitals have said they will be operating as usual next Monday. The bank holiday for the Queen’s funeral has also resulted in some funerals being postponed.

One caller on the James O’Brien show on LBC radio told the presenter that her mother’s funeral would not go ahead next Monday as it was on the same day as the Queen’s.

The caller said: “It feels like one of those decisions that can be made on paper very easily, but there’s no appreciation of the stress and practical problems that causes.”

National Association of Funeral Directors spokeswoman Deborah Smith confirmed that some funerals next Monday have been moved, but with the family’s consent.

“Having spoken to a number of our members, they have all worked with families to try and accommodate their wishes – whether that is to move or to go ahead,” she said.

“If their chosen funeral venue has taken the decision to close, they’ve worked with them to find another date, or another venue that they are happy with.”

Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management chief executive Julie Dunk said that while some crematoriums are closing, the majority are remaining open and carrying out funerals already booked for Monday.

“Our advice to our members is they should be driven by the wishes of families regarding funerals that had already been booked for September 19,” she said. “If the families wish to go ahead, they should be allowed to.”

The government said that organisations are under no obligation to close on September 19.
