Mark Fisher Memorial Lecture attracts thousands

MORE than 1,000 Londoners crowded into a university on Friday evening to hear a lecture in honour of left-wing thinker Mark Fisher.

Organisers at Goldsmiths University needed to book four additional rooms to cater for the huge demand to see the talk by political theorist Jodi Dean.

Her speech, which focused on the concept of comradeship in socialist politics, and of the need for collective action to change human conditions, was entitled “Capitalism is the End of the World” — a reference to a phrase popularised by Mr Fisher that “it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism.”

The event was organised as the second Mark Fisher Annual Lecture, which was created in honour of Mr Fisher, who is widely credited with politicising thousands of young people, after his death at the age of 48 in January 2017.
