Farage's anti-net zero rally cancelled after Labour MP Graham Stringer pulls out
Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage

NIGEL FARAGE’S anti-net zero rally has been cancelled by organisers after key speaker Labour MP Graham Stringer pulled out of the event.

The Vote Power Not Poverty rally was scheduled to launch the former Ukip leader’s campaign calling for a referendum on net zero in Bolton on Saturday.

But organisers said the event had been cancelled yesterday following what they called a “wave of abuse, threats and intimidation by people and groups determined to stop any kind of free and democratic discussion.”

The statement adds: “We had already been forced to change venue and key speakers have been pressured to withdraw. Our current venue has also now become a target of intimidation.”

The previous venue, owned by Bolton Wander’s Football Club, cancelled the booking, saying the event was “not something the club and business wishes to be associated with.”

The cancellation comes after right-wing Labour MP Mr Stringer pulled out of the event amid anger at his appearance alongside Mr Farage, as well as Reform UK leader Richard Tice and broadcaster Julia Hartley-Brewer.

His involvement in the rally had prompted anger among Labour MPs with some expressing concerns that the Labour leadership was treating left-wing members more harshly than the right of the party.

Labour MP Diane Abbott tweeted: “How come right-wing Labour MPs are allowed to share a platform with Farage, but left-wing MPs are not even allowed to sign an anti-war letter?”

Anti-racism campaigners celebrated the cancellation of the event.

Stand up to Racism co-convenor Weyman Bennett told the Morning Star: “Farage is a danger to our planet and our society, who is simultaneously a friend of the rich oilman and a scapegoat of migrants. Save our planet, cancel Farage.”
