BRITAIN’S economy faces “failure and stagnation” if the Tories win the general election, shadow chancellor John McDonnell has warned.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed yesterday that the economy saw zero growth in October, following two months of declining gross domestic product (GDP).
This is the first time since the recession in early 2009 that the economy has failed to grow for three months.
The data also showed that the economy grew by just 0.7 per cent year-on-year in October, the worst performance since summer 2012.
The statistics offer a stark look at Britain’s economic health ahead of election day tomorrow.
Mr McDonnell said: “We can look forward to five more years of economic failure and stagnation if the Conservatives win the election.
“Labour will get the economy moving with a first Budget on February 5 to end cuts once and for all, while the Conservatives will continue with the same approach that has left earnings below where they were 10 years ago.
“Labour has an ambitious plan to put money in your pocket by boosting productivity and growth, and our first 100 days in government will deliver real change to the economy after years of going backwards.”
A spokesman for general union Unite said: “These figures demonstrate what workers the length and breadth of the UK already know.
“The economy is stagnating, thousands of good, skilled jobs are being lost, families and communities are devastated and opportunities for young people lost.
“The situation will not improve until we have long-term solutions, not short-term fixes.”
