Alleged rape victim of unnamed Tory former minister wants MPs to name and shame him

THE identity of the Conservative MP who was arrested on suspicion of rape should be revealed in Parliament when MPs return to Westminster next week, his alleged victim has said.

A former minister in his 50s was arrested earlier this month over allegations involving four separate incidents of rape and sexual assault.

A former Commons researcher in her 20s said she needed hospital treatment after an alleged attack by the MP.

The Conservative Party has refused to suspend the MP, who is on bail while police investigate.

The woman accusing him of rape is calling on MPs to name him when they return from summer recess, using parliamentary privilege to immunise them from legal action.

The absolute privilege allows members to speak during parliamentary proceedings without being liable for defamation, while also opening up the qualified privilege of the press to report what they say in the chambers.

A friend of the woman said: “She is only going down this route because of the lack of action by the Conservative Party.

“He should not under any circumstances be allowed to meet constituents and in any other workplace he would be suspended. He’s been arrested for a serious violent offence.

“It’s important he’s named so every constituent can take relevant precautions — it’s a public safety issue.”

Friends and allies of the former minister say that naming him would risk revealing his accuser’s identity. But the woman, who worked for a different MP, says this is untrue.

In 2018, Lord Peter Hain used his parliamentary privilege to name Topshop boss Sir Philip Green as the “leading businessman” accused of sexual and racial harassment against employees.

The retail tycoon had taken out an interim injunction to prevent the press from naming him as the accused.
