GOALS from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard swept aside newly promoted Coventry City in front of 60,098 fans on a joyous Friday evening in north London.

Mikel Arteta’s side eased past the Sky Blues to kick off the new 2026-27 Premier League season with a victory that underlined their strength in depth.

The reigning champions laid down a marker for their title rivals by eclipsing the spirited challenge of Frank Lampard’s Championship winners — beaten in their first Premier League game since 2001— in the Gunners bid to land back-to-back titles for the first time since the 1930s.

Havertz opened the scoring on 15 minutes, before Saka doubled the lead eight minutes later. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth only managing to palm Christos Tzolis’ ball to the feet of the England international, who fired into the unguarded net for his first competitive goal since scoring a memorable hat-trick against France in Miami during the chaotic 6-4 victory in the third-place play-off at the World Cup.

However, Arsenal were far more controlled than Thomas Tuchel’s underachieving England side, underlined when skipper Odegaard made it 3-0 to seal the match shortly after the restart. The Gunners excellent performance supplemented by the exciting summer signing of Tzolis, whose ability to cut inside and create chances, while offering metronomic work rate up and down the flanks when out of possession, reminded those of a certain vintage of the club’s 1989 title winner Brian Marwood.

Speaking after the final whistle, Arteta said: “There was a lot to like. It was a great result, but the manner we started the game, the domination, clarity, understanding and growth in the game was really impressive. 

“It was great because the start is always tricky. We played a team that had a long time to prepare as well, and they are really good at what they do. But again, I was really impressed with the result.”

To cap a good night for the champions, Arteta also confirmed the injury to new signing Bruno Guimaraes that kept the £75m Brazil star out of the squad against the Sky Blues was not expected to sideline the 28-year-old for too long.

While former Chelsea midfielder and head coach Lampard, who started five of their £130m summer arrivals including £23m club record signing Caleb Yirenkyi, was full of candid praise for the title holders, saying: “Arsenal were amazing. 

“They’re on a different level. You have to give Arsenal credit,” he added, saying: “They were very, very good.”
