Activists pour ‘oil’ over Shell headquarters
Fossil Free London campaigners protest outside Shell's London HQ, July 2026

ACTIVISTS dressed as firefighters while others poured a black liquid resembling oil over their heads during a protest outside Shell’s global headquarters today.

They carried placards reading: “Shell fuels wildfires” and “Stop pouring oil on the flames” ahead of the oil giant’s quarterly profit announcement on Thursday.

The protest took place as more than 300,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes by wildfires across Spain and France, with blazes also hitting Scotland, Italy and Portugal amid record-breaking heatwaves in Europe.

Fossil Free London’s Robin Wells said: “Fire needs fuel … we all know those red and yellow flames are turbocharged by Shell’s oil.

“As we witness one of the biggest evacuation efforts on the continent since World War II, the heavy weight in our heart is the knowledge there’s so much more to come.

“Stop pouring Shell’s oil onto this house, torn down by fire. People need to stop the harm and rebuild.

“[Prime Minister] Andy Burnham and [Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary] Miatta Fahnbulleh need to make clear now that protecting people from wildfires, drought, crop failures and heatwaves means stopping new oil.

“It means they must stop Rosebank,” he added, referring to an as-yet undeveloped oil and gas field west of Shetland.
