Academy fat cats slammed for closing school kitchens with ‘minimal notice’

AN ACADEMY chain in Hull closed three school kitchens with “minimal notice” today, threatening hundreds of pupils’ school dinners, the GMB union has said.

Horizon Academy Trust’s decision will see meals shipped into Cleeve, Bilton and Hedon primary schools from other kitchens within the trust, leading to job losses, poorer provision and a lack of flexibility for individual pupils’ needs, GMB organiser Liz Marshall said.

A protest against the move is planned for March 13 at Cleeve primary school.

Ms Marshall said: “For Horizon to try and make petty cost savings at the expense of their staff and pupils is a disgrace.

“Parents have told us how worried they are.

“If Horizon can find £230,000 a year for its chief executive’s pay, they can certainly find the money to ensure pupils get a hot daily meal, which is prepared on site.”

The trust was contacted for comment.
