UNISON delegates have warned that abuse and assaults are becoming an accepted part of the job, particularly in schools and the early years sector.
The union’s local government conference held in Brighton backed a motion to tackle violence at work on Sunday.
Powerful testimonies about the impact of physical assaults, verbal abuse and threats on front-line staff were shared.
“Violence at work is not part of the job that any of us should accept,” one speaker said.
“But for local government workers, it’s an everyday reality. Our members face verbal abuse, threats and, in some cases, physical assaults.
“Too often, these incidents go unsupported.”
Another delegate working in early years education opened up about her personal experience.
She said: “Unfortunately, I’ve been a victim of violence in school and have the scars to show it.”
Delegates heard that violence at work is linked to wider issues of staffing, pay and working conditions.
They called for stronger reporting systems, employer accountability and a culture of zero tolerance across local government services.
