ABERDEEN’s political leaders have united to condemn “disgraceful” threats to council workers taking down flags to put up Christmas lights around the city.
The Union flag and the Saltire have appeared on lampposts around Scotland in recent months as a cipher for anti-migrant sentiment, with local authority workers around the country facing abuse as they go about taking down flags raised on council property without permission.
In a statement of support for those faced with such abuse as they clear the way to put up the city’s Christmas decorations, SNP Aberdeen City Council leader Christian Allard, Labour group leader Tauqeer Malik, councillor Richard Brooks (Scottish Conservative), and Lib Dem councillor Ian Yuill have urged the public to respect the workers.
“The installation of Christmas lights is a council-approved initiative designed to bring joy and celebration to residents and visitors alike,” they said.
“Threatening or obstructive behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
“This behaviour is disgraceful and completely unacceptable.
“Our workers are doing their job to make Aberdeen a brighter, more welcoming city for everyone.
“They deserve respect and protection, not intimidation.”
