A MAJORITY of people in Wales would vote for independence if the country could rejoin the European Union, a poll has revealed, according to independence campaigners.

The poll, commissioned by YesCymru, comes ahead of a planned march for independence in Barry, south Wales, on April 26.

When asked if Wales should be an independent country, 51 per cent said yes if the country was back in Europe.

The group claimed this is the first time a majority has supported independence, but the polling question was framed if Wales had rejoined the EU despite a majority in Wales voting to leave in the 2016 referendum.

The same poll found 41 per cent would vote Yes if a referendum on Welsh independence were held tomorrow.

YesCymru chair Phyl Griffiths said: “While YesCymru does not take a position on EU membership, this result shows that when people are presented with a clear post-independence scenario, support for independence grows.”
