Shapps ‘reheated’ plan will do nothing to end fire and rehire, unions warn
THE Tory government’s “reheated” proposals to prevent another P&O-style scandal “won’t deter bad bosses from treating staff like disposable labour,” the TUC warned today.
The charge came after Business Secretary Grant Shapps announced plans for a statutory code of practice for employers.
The document, which ministers claimed would empower employees to seek compensation from bosses engaging in fire-and-rehire tactics, was partly prompted by P&O Ferries’ widely condemned decision last year to sack 786 seafarers without notice or union consultation.
