ESTEEMED Focus E15 mums housing activists will be celebrating the second anniversary of their campaign today with a protest against evictions.
The march will take over east London, where the mums lived at the start of their campaign, finishing at Carpenters Estate in Newham which was occupied last year by the group and its supporters.
Focus E15 spokeswoman Jasmin Stone said: “The housing crisis continues, with no major political party offering viable solutions.
“Twenty-six families are evicted every day across the country.
“We continue to demand the repopulation of the Carpenters Estate, an immediate end to decanting and evictions of residents from the estate, long-term and secure tenancies for all, and of course social housing, not social cleansing.”
Ms Stone was arrested by the Metropolitan Police earlier this year while helping to stop the eviction of a fellow east London woman.
Her arrest, followed by a quick dropping of all charges, was labelled by campaigners as a “set up” and an attempt at criminalising housing campaigners.
Today’s protest is supported by a series of different campaigns, including student groups demanding rent controls in the London.
NUS vice-president for welfare Shelly Asquith told the Star: “Students are facing a housing crisis, both in terms of the ever-narrowing gap between their incomes and what they are expected to pay in rent, and the poor conditions they face once they’re through the door.
“With eviction threats on top of this, it’s no wonder students want to take action and protest for better housing conditions and rights.”
The protest will end with a visual tribute to the 50,000 families that left London due to evictions or poverty in the last three years.
