Campaigner wants to swim with big fish

A HOUSING campaigner who led her estate’s residents against a landlord trying to double their rent announced her bid to stand for London mayor as a candidate for the Something New party yesterday.

New Era estate mum Lindsey Garrett launched her draft manifesto promising rent controls and a mandatory living wage as several Labour luminaries threw their hats into the ring.

Ms Garrett is now vowing to bring a “new era” to the city by integrating all of London’s NHS services, taxing hotels to finance culture and pushing for devolution.

“With Labour opposed to both rent controls and building enough homes and the Conservative Party set to decimate housing associations, someone needs to stand up for Londoners.

“It looks like that will have to be me.”

Ms Garrett made headlines last year when her campaign New Era For All forced US developer Westbrook Partners to sell the Hoxton estate to a charity when evicting the 93 resident families became impossible.

But she will have to contend with such high-profile Labour candidates as Diane Abbott, Sadiq Khan, Tessa Jowell and David Lammy, who have all presented their own claims for the position.

Hackney North & Stoke Newington MP Ms Abbott seemed to be gearing up for a fight as she launched a fierce attack on the “nasty party.”

Ms Abbott, who increased her majority by almost eight points in last week’s general election, argued that Tory policies will be worst felt in the “most vulnerable communities.”

She said: “Where is the legislation on tax avoidance, bank regulation or the crackdown on predatory employers?

“Instead the narrow focus of the ‘nasty party’ has revealed its true colours and the fight is on to protect our most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities from further ideologically driven attacks.”

Ms Abbott added: “Hard times call for a campaigning mayor.

“As the MP for Hackney, I have always worked to bring all our communities together.

“And that is the kind of mayor that I will be.”

The selection ballot for Labour’s candidate closes on September 10.
