Viva Palestina: Aberdeen to celebrate solidarity

ABERDEEN will host a “festival of solidarity” with the people of Palestine this weekend, beginning tomorrow.

From marches and demonstrations of support to pickets of companies with links to Israel such as Barclays bank, the city has seen consistent campaigning activity throughout the five-month Israeli onslaught on the people of Gaza.

The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), alongside other local activists, has now launched Viva Palestina, Aberdeen’s first festival of Palestine.

Running from tomorrow to Sunday, the city will host a vigil for health workers killed in the Palestinian enclave and a wider family-friendly roster of events such as film screenings, kite-making workshops and a “Palestine cafe takeover” as they aim to both broaden cultural understanding and deepen solidarity.

Dave Black of the Scottish PSC and one of the festival organisers said: “It has been inspiring to see the level of solidarity in Aberdeen, and across Scotland, with the Palestinian people in recent months.

“The festival is a way to reach more people who wish to show their solidarity, but who might not feel comfortable attending a demonstration or protest event.”
