May Day will see a record turnout at the Marx Memorial Library’s annual open day

MAY DAY will see a record turnout at the Marx Memorial Library’s annual open day, with attendance by left-wing Indian journalist and author Vijay Prashad, the charity has revealed.

Crowds will gather outside the library in Clerkenwell Green, central London, for the capital’s annual International Workers’ Day march and rally.

Mr Prashad will speak from the steps of the building before the march sets off for Trafalgar Square.

The library offers tours of the educational charity’s historic building so that visitors can get a glimpse of the “revolutionary thought housed at the library,” it said.

“Visitors will set foot in the Lenin room, where the visionary Russian leader once toiled during his exile in London,” according to a statement.

“Additionally, [the library] proudly showcases an original fresco by Jack Hastings, a poignant depiction of the relentless struggle against capitalism.”

There will be a prelude event on April 26 for local residents and those who want to find out more.

“This gathering, convening at 6.30pm, serves as a gateway for attendees to delve into the origins and enduring significance of May Day,” the library said.

“Under the banner of ‘May Day, May Day!’ participants will be treated to an immersive experience, featuring music from the Raised Voices choir and an engaging document handling session drawing from [the library’s] archive.”

The free drop-in event will also feature a Q&A session with labour historian Mary Davis and trade unionist Alex Gordon, who will “unravel the intricate tapestry of May Day’s genesis, tracing its roots back to the 19th century while illuminating why its spirit continues to resonate with so many today.”
