RISHI SUNAK has refused to recommit to his spring deadline for getting flights off the ground to Rwanda, blaming Labour peers after his widely condemned deportation policy was blocked at the Lords.
The Prime Minister has repeatedly stated his intention to start deportation flights to the east African nation by this spring.
Mr Sunak vowed to “get this done on Monday” by getting parliamentarians to “sit there and vote” until it is done as it remains stuck in deadlock after peers again insisted on changes this week.
The Tories’ flagship legislation aims to send some asylum-seekers on a one-way trip to Rwanda in order to deter people from crossing the English Channel in small boats.
Natasha Tsangarides, associate director of advocacy at Freedom From Torture, said: “People fleeing torture and war deserve our safety and protection.
“We know from the work we do with survivors of torture every day just how terrified people are of being shipped off to Rwanda.”
