Rail workers launch fresh strikes to keep guards on trains

RAIL workers are launching fresh strikes tomorrow to defend the role of guards on trains after the RMT condemned the “intransigence” of train company bosses and accused the government of political interference.

RMT members at train operators Greater Anglia and Northern will walk out in the latest fight of the long-running dispute over driver-only operations (DOO).

The industrial action goes against the trend of recent weeks, when the union has called off strikes on South Western Railway and Merseyrail after arbitration service Acas mediated in negotiations between workers’ representatives and employers about the role of the guard on the train.
