FROM the Grand National at Aintree to the Scottish Grand National at Ayr (4.05), this afternoon and a real chance for the unexposed outsider JOE FARRELL (nap) to make his mark.
Rebecca Curtis hasn’t had the best of seasons, but she has taken her time with this nicely bred nine-year-old that paid dividends when he had his first run for four months and absolutely hacked up at Newbury.
Of course this is a much bigger task for this young horse, but he arrives here fresh and lightly raced and looks the most obvious source of an upset.
Many will be on the side of the Scottish National hat-trick-seeking Vincente, but he is 5lbs higher today and this year’s renewal looks a much, much deeper event.
Indeed the likes of The Young Master, Label Des Obeaux and Irish raider Fagan look much bigger dangers.
The first-named finally showed he retains some ability with a fair running-on effort at Cheltenham last time out on ground that wouldn’t have suited and he promises to be even more effective over this marathon trip.
Label Des Obeaux finally has the ground he craves and has slowly dropped in the ratings, while Fagan remains a work in progress from his all-conquering yard.
There are several other appealing betting mediums at the West of Scotland track, including the talented but error-prone KEEPERS HILL in the 2.20 and then CHARLI PARCS (nb) in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at 2.55.
The latter has always been a favourite of Nicky Henderson, but ground conditions have been against him all season.
If the ground continues to dry out, then this son of Anabaa Blue could prove too speedy for the likes of Chesterfield and I’m A Game Changer.
Over at Newbury the Greenham Stakes looks at the mercy of the Sir Michael Stoute-trained EXPERT EYE at 3.10. However, this 2,000 Guineas contender will be no price at all and a better value bet on the card could come in the form of TONY CURTIS in the Spring Cup Handicap at 3.45.
I expect the Richard Hannon charge to make up into a graded performer this season following a progressive 2017 in some of the best one-mile handicaps.
He has a fair record fresh and gets the nod over George William, who ran well in the race last year, and the unexposed and lighter weighted Mazyoun.
With a run under his belt, COSMIC CHATTER looks worthy of some each-way support in the Thirsk 2.30.
Ruth Carr’s stable are in good form and this veteran likes a bit of dig in the ground.
Later on, KIMBERELLA can land his first race over seven furlongs when he contests the 3.05, while the lightly raced ARROWTOWN has solid claims if continuing on an upward curve in the mile-and-a-half handicap at 4.15.
Finally have a look at the evening card at Wolverhampton where I am fairly sweet on the claims of POWERFUL DREAM in the 6.30.
The top weight looks sure to go close to following up a smooth win at Chelmsford City last time out, while ISLAND CLOUD finally looks ready for the step back up to seven furlongs at 7.00.
