SPEEDWAY: Workington Comets racer Celina Liebmann won the inaugural FIM women’s Speedway Gold trophy in Teterow, Germany, on Sunday evening.

Backed by a home crowd, Liebmann won all four of her heats to take the title from Dutch rider Nynke Sjbesma with Australia’s Anika Loftus in third.

The play-off final could not be contested after Sjbesma and Loftus crashed out and were hospitalised in heat 12.

CYCLING: Arnaud de Lie will be wearing the Belgian national colours at this year’s Tour de France after sprinting to victory in the national championships.

Jasper Philipsen finished second with Jordi Meeus third as defending champion Remco Evenepoel did not start the race due to illness.

World champion Lotte Kopecky won the women’s race by over three minutes after a dramatic solo attack with nearly 30km to race.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: East Kilbride-based Caledonia Gladiators have been named as one of the 24 teams that will be competing for a place in this year’s Champions League.

They will be competing against 12 national champions including Sweden’s Norrkoping Dolphins, Portugal’s SL Benfica and Cholet from France for the four remaining qualification places.

Caledonia finished third in last season’s British Basketball League.
