XR announce mass occupation after general election result

CLIMATE activists accused Labour today of “simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic,” responding to the party’s general election victory by inviting people to join a three-day mass occupation.

Extinction Rebellion’s three-day Upgrade Democracy occupation will explore ways to reform Britain’s democratic system.

It take place in a secret location that will target a “symbol of our broken system” in south-east England from August 30 to September 1.

Extinction Rebellion spokesman and Olympic slalom canoeist Etienne Stott said: “Labour are simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

“The new government will struggle to do the right thing in a system that has been corrupted by oil and gas interests that have been spreading denial and delay for the last 40 years.

“Only a citizens’ assembly can break through the influence of lobbyists, donors and a hostile right-wing press.”

An analysis by Vote Climate found that all main political parties’ plans would take average world temperatures to more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels between 2030 and 2035.
