Shaw and Greenwood star as champions thrash Brighton to lift FA Cup
ANDREE JEGLERTZ challenged Manchester City to maintain an insatiable appetite for success after they sealed a maiden domestic double in his first season in charge.
Khadija “Bunny” Shaw and captain Alex Greenwood became the first pair of team-mates to score and assist in a Women’s FA Cup final this century as Women’s Super League champions City beat Brighton 4-0 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup for a fourth time.
Jamaica international Shaw opened the scoring in the 38th minute from Greenwood’s cross – her first goal since announcing a four-year contract extension on Monday, on stage at City’s end-of-season celebrations.
Jeglertz said: “It was an amazing end of the season.
“It’s been a long year. Winning the WSL title was big for the club, but we’ve also talked about there’s one thing of being able to win the title, but also just a couple of weeks later being able to be a winning team that is also winning the next title, so keep on having this hunger and dedication to want something more, not be pleased.
“I think that will be a very important thing for us in the future, to not think that anything will be prevented. We need to keep on having this hunger for the next level.”
Jeglertz admitted he was not pleased with City’s performance in an impressive first half from FA Cup final debutants Brighton, who just lacked a finishing touch.
Greenwood scored directly from a free-kick in first-half stoppage time before Aoba Fujino, with a Shaw assist, and substitute Vivianne Miedema, in action for the first time since late March, added two more goals after the break.
Speaking after the triumph, Greenwood told CBS Sports W Golazo: “I’m over the moon.
“The difference this season is we’re capable of changing. If you look at our squad, even the players that come on, players that don’t even get on the pitch, our squad is unbelievable.
“Just a really confident squad. I’m a really proud captain.”
City midfielder Laura Blindkilde Brown admitted Shaw’s extension reveal caught even some of the WSL Golden Boot winner’s own team-mates off guard.
Jeglertz added: “It’s amazing that she thinks our programme is the best way to become a better football player, and also this is the right place she wants to be to win titles. We have Bunny Shaw in our team, and we play a certain way to get the best out of her.
Brighton boss Dario Vidosic said after the match: “I feel the result is a little bit unfair on the girls, but it wasn’t that long ago where we were probably fighting to get five minutes of dominance against a City team.
“To then do what we’ve done today at Wembley, for the first time these girls are experiencing this day. To be that brave to play [like we did], I’m really, really proud, and there’s a lot to look forward to in the future.”
