Deposed leader of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Ozgur Ozel arrives for a rally in Izmir, Turkey, May 26, 2026

TURKEY: Tens of thousands of supporters of the deposed leader of Turkey’s main opposition party marched through central Ankara on Saturday.

Ozgur Ozel was removed from his post at the head of the CHP by court order on May 21. Many people consider the ruling to be a politically motivated bid to neutralise the opposition.

Crowds earlier gathered in Guven Park in the heart of the Turkish capital to hear Mr Ozel deliver a speech condemning his removal.

AFGHANISTAN: A lorry carrying Afghan refugees returning from neighbouring Pakistan overturned on a highway in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 22 people and injuring about 36 others, most of them women and children, officials said.

The incident occurred in Laghman province on the main highway linking Kabul, the Afghan capital, with Nangarhar province, said Abdul Malik Niazai, the spokesperson for the provincial governor.

CHINA: A collapse occurred in an illegal mining operation in China today, killing five people and injuring one other person, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The incident took place in Huize County in Yunnan province in south-west China, according to Xinhua. The news outlet did not specify what kind of mine it was.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse.

WESTERN MILITARISM: Defence leaders from the United States, Britain and Australia meeting in Singapore on Saturday agreed to a new security pact that will see them develop undersea drones, supposedly to protect underwater cables.

The countries will collaborate to develop other advanced military technologies, including quantum computing, undersea, hypersonic, artificial intelligence and cyber technology.
