UNITED STATES: Protesters clashed with armed federal immigration officers in front of a New Jersey detention centre where advocates have demonstrated for days while asserting that people detained there are staging a hunger strike over poor living conditions. Six protesters were arrested.

The families of detainees and their supporters said Thursday that immigrants being held at Delaney Hall in Newark have been subjected to pepper spray and physical force.

RUSSIA: A Russian drone that was part of an overnight attack on Ukraine crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people, Romanian authorities said today.

General Gheorghe Maxim of the Romanian Armed Forces joint staff said the incident “is not an attack from Russia against Romania,” but “Romanians should understand that Russia is a threat to the security of the countries in the area.”

CLIMATE EMERGENCY: In the next five years, the Earth is overwhelmingly likely to surge past the international climate threshold set as safe and shatter its hottest-year record along the way, according to new United Nations climate projections released on Thursday.

The World Meteorological Organisation said there is a 75 per cent chance that the average global temperature between 2026 and 2030 will be more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) higher compared to pre-industrial times.

SUDAN: A humanitarian organisation today accused forces affiliated with Sudan’s United Arab Emirates-backed paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of targeting civilians in North Kordofan, killing 27 people.

Sudan Doctors Network said Thursday’s attack took place in villages in al-Murrah area, west of Barah town in North Kordofan.
