DONALD TRUMP has ramped up tension with South Africa again, announcing he is raising the “refugee cap” for the year to 10,000 but only for white South Africans.
Mr Trump suspended the US Refugee Admissions Programme on his first day in office and has since only made exceptions for white South Africans, claiming without evidence that they are being subjected to a genocide by the black majority. His ally tech tycoon Elon Musk was raised in apartheid South Africa, leaving the country in 1989 shortly before democracy was secured, and has also levelled regular evidence-free assertions that the country is conducting a “white genocide.”
Mr Trump said he was raising the number who would be allowed into the US because of “an unforeseen emergency refugee situation” caused by “recent increases in the incitement of racially motivated violence” by the South African government. He gave no evidence or details.
