PRIVATE jets should be banned and motorway speed limits cut to 60mph to ease a looming fuel supply crisis, leading climate and transport organisations have said.
Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and others are calling on ministers to lower oil demand now “in a fair and orderly way” rather than sleepwalk into severe shortages and spiralling petrol prices this summer.
Greenpeace UK’s Doug Parr said measures such as lower speed limits and banning private jets and short-haul flights “would cause minimal inconvenience now and avoid much more painful decisions later on.”
Green leader Zack Polanski backed a private jet ban, saying ordinary families faced cancelled holidays because of “[US President Donald] Trump’s illegal war in Iran” while the super-rich continued flying “at will.”
Banning private jets alongside levies on ultra-frequent flyers and short-haul flights could save nearly a million tonnes of jet fuel annually, Greenpeace research shows.
Cutting motorway speeds by 10mph could save a further half a million tonnes.
A government spokesperson said airlines were “not currently seeing a shortage” of fuel and that while speed limit changes and private jet restrictions were not planned, “contingency plans include all options for fuel prioritisation if needed.”
