Spencer slams scapegoating of minorities in historic by-election victory speech
Green Party's Hannah Spencer celebrates winning the Gorton and Denton by-election at Manchester Central, February 27, 2026

NEW Green MP Hannah Spencer slammed politicians for scapegoating communities after her sensational Gorton and Denton by-election victory today.

The 34-year-old plumber said “we can win anywhere” and voters “rejected hate and embraced hope” after consigning Labour to third place, behind Reform UK, in a seat it had held since 1931.

In her victory speech, she said: “I didn’t grow up wanting to be a politician.

“I am no different to every single person here in this constituency. I work hard. That is what we do.

“I won’t accept this victory tonight without calling out politicians and divisive figures who constantly scapegoat and blame our communities for all the problems in society.

“My Muslim friends and neighbours are just like me, human.”

The Green Party’s sixth MP overturned Labour’s 13,000 majority to take the Greater Manchester seat with 14,980 votes, a majority of 4,402 over Reform’s Matt Goodwin.

Ms Spencer has pledged to fight to end local fly-tipping and introduce rent controls.

She hit out at working people “being bled dry” to line the pockets of billionaires as she vowed to “make space for everyone doing jobs like mine” in Parliament.

“We will finally get a seat at the table,” she said.

“People in their thousands told me, on the doorstep and at the ballot box, that what we are sick of is being let down and looked down on.

“That we are sick of our hard work making other people rich.

“We can demand better without hating each other.

“We ran a hopeful campaign backed by thousands of volunteers and activists.

“We defeated the parties of billionaire donors.

“Because this is Manchester. We do things differently here.”
